overkligheten
Hi I'm new here in the Cascades and looking for a backcountry skiing guide... Is there something out there except for the Snoqualami pass book by Volken?? Looking for somewhat adventurous routes not backing off for mixed ski/climbing access. cj001f
Yeah, Fred Beckey wrote some awesome ones.
ericb
I've got both Volken's guide and this one http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Backcountry-Snowboard-Routes-Washington/dp/0898866618 It's pretty good, but not as much beta as Volken gives on the individual routes. Great to use for ideas with a larger coverage area, and then perhaps gather additional beta from here or TAY.
AlpineK
I've only got the Volken Snoqualmie pass guide for skiing in the Cascades. Everything else I've done is from looking at the Beckey guide or talking to people. If you don't mind a bit more driving get; Exploring the Coast Mountains on Skis by John Baldwin. I've put together some nutty tours with that book.
Telemack
Try these: Blair, Seabury. Backcountry Ski! Washington. Sasquatch Books, 1998. Mostly shorter/winter season tours, but I've used it a lot. A bit of non-Cascade stuff too. Repetitive but good maps. Burgdorfer, Rainer. 100 Classic Backcountry Ski and Snowboard Routes in Washington. The Mountaineers, 1999. The standard, with lots of long hard tours. Maps hard to read. Van Tilburg, Christopher. Backcountry Ski! Oregon. Sasquatch, 2001. Good also, tho I've only used this a few times. Focuses on volcanoes, w/ snowboarding emphasized. Lots on Hood, a bit on Wallowas, some S. WA tours.
