flashclimber Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Anyone know how to get rid of mold on tents? A friend borrowed my tent and put it back wet and didn't tell me. Any tricks or treatments to get rid of the black spots? Quote
mtngt Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Nickwax makes a tech wash that worked for me with a tent moldy from same circumstance. Last time loaning gear! Quote
catbirdseat Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 (edited) Bleach. Best you can hope for is to kill the smell. You may have to live with visible spots. Good luck. Edited September 17, 2007 by catbirdseat Quote
Off_White Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 From your friends at REI: Removing Mildew Mildew can develop any time your tent is stored wet. It looks bad, smells bad and can damage your tent's waterproof coatings. DON'T LET IT START. Alas, if it already exists, here's one way to approach it: * Try some light scrubbing with a sponge during a regular cleaning session. * If it's still apparent, mix one-half cup of Lysol® in 1 gallon of hot water. * Dip a sponge in this solution use it to lightly but thoroughly scrub mildew-afflicted areas. * Set up the tent and allow it to air dry. * Then, mix 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of concentrated lemon juice with 1 gallon of hot water. * Rub the solution into the visible mildew and once again, allow the tent to dry. This procedure will stop mildew growth and eliminate the odor, but will not remove the stain. Don't be thinking you're going to put it in the washing machine either... Quote
marylou Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 That recipe OW put up works. I had to do that to a mildly moldy tent once and it kills it good. Quote
