How much snow might one have to deal with to reach the start of Backbone Ridge and to get back of Dragontail? I'm wondering about carrying crampons/axe on the route.

Thanks.

If you climb the lower portion of Backbone Ride that everybody avoids by heading out left and back right as per Nelson's guide, you won't climb any snow on the route at all. I don't really recommend this alternative because there is some harder climbing there and it is less enjoyable than what you find higher on the route, but this is what I did on a May ascent of the route many years ago and it is an option.

you may know this already too, but you can rap off of the summit all the way back down to the flats at ass-master pass - so if you can get on route w/o cramps or axe your fine - even w/ some hard snow you oughta be able to cover the short distance to the wall from the moraine w/ just a rock
