Trip: South Sister - Blown Away Ridge - Ying Yang

Date: 5/29/2007

Trip Report:

After my memorial weekend plans were squashed by a back injury early last week I took it easy all weekend, but killer weather, and a rapidly dwindling snowpack in the sisters made me realize that not skiing this weekend would be downright stoopid.

So I packed my stuff late sunday night for an early assault on the daunting SOUTH SISTER.

Fearing a throng of gapers on the standard south route, I opted for my favorite stash on the SE flank that I loving call Blown Away Ridge/Ying Yang... sorry no pics this time but the ones in that last TR show the zone I was in.

Only 1 car in the lot at Green Lakes!?! and I only saw briefly two snowboarders hiking into the GL Basin... other than that, my little slice o cornocopia was all mine.

~3k' of killer corn turns back down to fall creek from the Lewis Glacier Moraine. Super super smooth, fast turns. I'm sure the dudes up on the standard route (which look a bit whacked out already from high traffic) were envious of my MAD GAPER STEEZE.

Saw some old snowmobile tracks deep in the wilderness boundary on my trip and many of the good spring ski lines on Bachy have been down-right raped by sledneckers making many of them unskiable, :(

Anyhow if anyone is thinking of getting to the 3SW to make some turns, do it quick because it is going very fast (and will be done by mid June this year).

Approach Notes:

Green Lakes TH is totally melted out. Trail is somewhat snow free until the first switchbacks above the falls.

Upper pitch of South is already melting out rapidly. West face of Brokentop is still in, Thunderbird face has entered its sad summertime choss faze.

Way to get on it, glad to hear your back is feeling better. Sounds like it's melting out quick, and about to get even hotter.

Time go go cragging.
