pink_chalk
On a more *positve* note... GLAD everyone made it down safely! ________________________________ 5 climbers rescued from Mt. Hood 11:53 AM PDT on Sunday, May 13, 2007 By TERESA BELL and ADRIANE HORNER, kgw.com Staff GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. -- Five climbers stranded at the 9,800-foot level of Mt Hood on Saturday were safely rescued late that night. kgw.com A sheriff's deputy helps on of the climbers who was stranded on Mt. Hood Saturday night. Searchers said they were able to reach the group quickly with information from a GPS that they had brought with them in case of emergency. "Through the use of GPS coordinates and a mountain locator unit search efforts were swift and resulted in the rescue of the hikers quicker than anticipated. A snow cat was used to safely retrieve and transport the hikers off the mountain," said Sgt. Lee Eby, with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. Video: Watch KGW report The climbers were identified as Brian Anderson, 24, Ben Elkind, 22, and Jeremiah West, 28, all of Portland; Bryce Benge, 29, of Lake Oswego, and Brian Weihs, 39, of Hillsboro. Sgt. Eby said no one was injured. Call for help in white-out conditions The climbers initially called for help on Saturday afternoon; Clackamas County sheriff's deputies said their location had been pinpointed and they were not injured. Sheriff's spokesman Jim Strovink said the climbers had a mountain locator device, a global positioning system and were in contact by cell phone. He said they apparently got caught in a white-out in the 9800-foot area and could not get back down. He said they were initially advised to build a snow cave in case help couldn't arrive until Sunday morning.
