willstrickland Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 So with the exchange rates MEC has pretty good prices, the question is: How do you get around the shipping restrictions? Alot of the gear (Black Diamond, etc) they won't ship out of Canda eh, due to mandates from the manufacturers. I could just make a trip to BC, but that's a pretty long haul from Portland just to save a few bucks. Anybody have any ideas? Quote
Pencil_Pusher Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 Save your pennies for your next trip to Squamish/Whistler? Quote
philfort Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 Make friends in White Rock, BC and Blaine, WA. Ship it to White Rock, have your friend drive it to your Blaine friend, who then ships it to you. Or maybe Dru can start some backcountry smuggling runs from Chilliwack to Yellow Aster Butte. Quote
willstrickland Posted October 29, 2001 Author Posted October 29, 2001 Ok, so let's say I just get a buddy in BC to go pick it up or have it shipped to him, is there an issue with him just sending it straight on to me from BC via post? Quote
philfort Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 hmm... guess it's Monday - I didn't even think of that. Guess you just need a friend somewhere in BC (or anywhere canada). Quote
Dru Posted November 1, 2001 Posted November 1, 2001 when i make border runs they are from chilliwack lake up the river and out to glacier. but if you had a good catapault you could fire packages from the road in columbia valley across to the corresponding road on the us side, or you could just hand toss them across from zero avenue in surrey! i hear the border guards are so worried about terrorists now they are so relieved to find you are just smuggling bud they let you go with a hand shake and a kiss on the cheek Quote
dbb Posted November 1, 2001 Posted November 1, 2001 The one problem with the friend-shipping idea is that you still get reamed with the 14% tax (7.5 regular, and 7.5 GST (?)). You can get that back at the border crossing duty up to a certain amount. I'd say just go up to squamish or lilloet and make a trip to MEC out of it. Quote
willstrickland Posted November 1, 2001 Author Posted November 1, 2001 Enlighten me, what are these taxes you refer to? And how can I get around them? Quote
Dru Posted November 1, 2001 Posted November 1, 2001 No, BC charges 7% sales tax and there is a Canadian 7% GST (goods and services tax AKA gouge and screw tax). Foreigners like Americans can get their GST refunded at the border if they save theirreciepts. So Will, you come up here, buy a bunch of loot at MEC, then at the border stop by the refund center and get 7% refunds! Quote
dbb Posted November 1, 2001 Posted November 1, 2001 There must be something wrong with my add function: int PinkMoney::add(int i, int j) { return (i + j)*REALMONEY%7} help, what's wrong phil?!@? Quote
Bronco Posted November 2, 2001 Posted November 2, 2001 Then, if you spend your refund at the Duty Free shop to buy mongo alcohol or cigars you get an extra 10% off your purchace. Makes for a pretty cheap party Quote

Hey, your math is off Alpine Dave. 7.5 + 7.5 = 15! Quote
