iluka
Firefighters found the victims while responding to reports of gunfire Since when do firefighters respond to gun fire? WTF? Â The medic system in Seattle is based out of the fire department; all 911 calls generate a response from the FD.
snugtop
My bad. Friggen educated peoples. Â That's right. I am not in Information Technology. I am in Computer Science. Â I assume the media left out a step here? Like I'd expect some cops to show up and take care of scene safety before the FD went in?
archenemy
Isn't part of the FD responsibility to make sure a scene is safe? No sarcasm here--I honestly don't know where the lines are drawn.
Gary_Yngve
Yeah, they make sure that they themselves don't get hurt, and that bystanders don't get hurt. But if there's a closed room where gunshots came from, I don't think they go inside until they're sure a gun is not going to be used on them too. Dechristo
Scene safety is numero uno priority for FD/Paramedics. They call the cops as soon as they feel the need, which may be before they exit their vehicle.
iluka
I misspoke in my earlier post a bit. I meant to say that 911 calls involving injuries/illness issues generate a fire department response because the medic system is based out of the FD. Other 911 calls do not generate an FD response. Â As a rule, the medics do not go into an area until the scene is secure. If there is concern about the possibility a shooter on scene, they will remain in their rig until the police have arrived and secure the area. The medics and firemen are not armed. They may call for that assistance but usually the dispatcher will have already sent a police response based on the information provided in the initial 911 call.
