Grip tape for tools?

Hey folks,

 

I'd like to put some grip tape on the shafts of my quarks, but am not sure what people generally use. I've felt the stuff on the nomics, which seems all well and good... But where do you buy something similar, or what else works?

Hockey tape works ok and sheds snow pretty well. Alternatively you could go to a skateboard shop or a marine shop and buy some grip tape (like sand paper), but expect snow to stick to it as well.

petzl sells the nomic tape. Or just go to home depot, hit the electric section and get rubber-self adhesive mastic tape sp??, same thing on nomics but dont get the real thin shit it doesnt last as long and stretch it on. Grip tape shreds gloves quick and hockey tape is our enemy or the mounties, is cotton.

I used skateboard deck tape for one season and then this season went with the petzl/charlet stuff and found it better.

In the electrical tape aisle - Splicing tape. It was about $2 a roll at the Ace near my house.

You're looking for self-vulcanizing rubber tape. You can buy it in various hardware stores, but it varies in quality quite a bit.

I think this is exactly what is used on Nomics.

 

In Canada, Canadian Tire sells a brand in yellow packaging that is good. Like almost all self-vulcanizing tapes, it has an obvious white backer that must be peeled off before applying. The tape itself is not sticky, but it bonds to shafts (and especially to itself) when stretched.

 

I had trouble getting quality stuff in the US (at least in Boulder). Several people suggested Silicone "Fusion Tape", but the stuff begins to shred after a day of use. Perhaps it might be better suited for upper shaft use... Just don't get it near crampons. Regardless, look for RUBBER tape.

 

Add a rap of electrical tape at the top and bottom of the covered area to keep things from trying to unwind. The directions may claim this isn't necessary, but they're wrong for this application.

 

The tape will begin to break down after a season or two (it becomes very sticky and soft). Simply replace.

 

Avoid hockey tape.

the rubber tape shreds only if you get the thinner one. if you cant get it get in thru petzl

The tape to buy is not the non-sticky one, but the one from 3M, I tried both. Only saw at Lowe's (electrical department), it is a large roll for ~$8+, but well worth it, comes in a box package ~4" wide. It is far easier to use because there is no backing to peel, it is wider and thicker than others. Really cool thing: use for your ice tools, pullup bar, Bachar ladder... Home Depot sells one too but a smaller roll and is narrower.
