111 Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Trip: Mt. Hood - West Crater Date: 1/28/2007 Trip Report: Not much in this, but we tried to go up West Crater and only made it to the top of the parking lot because of the 35+ mph gusts. Watched a bunch of headlamps descending from hogsback at 3:30 am. Bummer dude! Quote
billbob Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 We made it to the Silcox hut before bailing, winds were a bit higher there. Tougher climbers than I, met coming down the SS route reported lower winds in the crater area but really high wind at the summit. Wondering if anyone actually made it all the way? Quote
lambda Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 I'm sorry, are we talking about the same Mount Hood? A small group seemed determined to summit at dawn, but the bulk of the pack arrived at the Hogsback at about 10 or 11. No wind (nada) on the summit at 10-ish. Bit of a queue crossing the knife-edge from the top of the west crater rim to the summit. Otherwise a delightful day, and sort of warm for the end of January. Quote
111 Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Yea, I guess I got the date wrong too. We were there friday night/sat morn. Quote
jfs1978 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 (edited) Conditions were great on SS above ~9,500 on Saturday morning. Snowpack was perfect, almost no wind, calm on the summit. Went Old Chute...did not check conditions of P Gates but assume they are still steep and icy. Out of curiousity, where exactly is the ice...bottom of the lower chute or in the left/right upper chutes? Haven't been able to tell from the pics online. Edited January 30, 2007 by jfs1978 Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 It was beautiful up there on Sunday. A bit breezy down low early in the a.m. Quote
Winter Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Rob what up beyotch? Did you see Pete up there on Sunday? We climbed and skied the SS on Saturday - great day! The turns from the Old Chute were pretty hard but down closer to the Hog's Back they got nice and buttery. Highlight of the day was watching my P kick off his Tele ski and near the bottom of the old chute and watching it hurtle toward the fumerole to the west of the Hog's Back! Came close to dropping in the small crevasse, but he was able to rescue it. Maybe up for some turns on Sunday? Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Slap mah fro! Keeping my pimp hand strong Chris. Didn't see Pete up there Sunday but saw him Monday at Seattles Worst. We skied to I-Rock and down Sunday. Picking our way back down from ice to fluff to ice again until the groomers. I'm always up for turns. Quote
sean_beanntan Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Hi Folks, dont wanna spoil the skiing off the west crater, but a loose ski tumbling down the slope nearly hit some climbers accending the hill over the w/e. Quote
