foraker Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 And since nothing like a view from the right gets this place all riled up like a bobcat in a wet burlap bag, I submit the following. linky Given our loveable guv's recent statements vis-a-vis budget surpluses and education, maybe this will make the fur fly and send kevbone home with a warm fuzzy. Or, it'll fall over DOA and kevbone will have to chew a cold bone in his lonely wet cave. Your choice. Quote
Couloir Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Portland Public Schools (their numbers): Total Budget $387,600,000 / 47,000 students = $8246/student Multiply that time 30 students (how many kids are in my son's class) and that's $247,383 per year...in ONE classroom. I could send him to a good private school for anywhere from $4000 to $6000 per year. The argument is that PPS has to take EVERYONE (physically/mentally disabled) and that weighs heavily on the budget. A burden private schools just don't have to take on. Ok, I get that. Then let's cut the per student number in half and it is still $4000 per student or $120,000 per year, per classroom. Not to sound like a broken record from another thread, but I think we can also thank the unions again here. I know my son's teacher isn't making much more $40,000 a year. Thanks to collective bargaining that what she makes. But with her talent and in a system not run by the unions, she could easily negotiate a much higher salary. Hell, our school alone fundraised over $750,000 last year. We gladly handed over 1/3 of that to the district (those are the rules) and we still had to make cuts. On top of that, The Oregonian reported that the re-elected Governor Kulongowski (who just annouced some key appointments, one to a union-leader, and another--to a union-leader) says that the new taxes that were passed for schools and the increase in state revenue will not affect classes sizes or quality of education for students. They will go to salaries, pensions (PERS) and benefits. Thank you very fucking much. Quote

minx Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 kevbone, when your child is a little older this will become a very interesting topic for you. foraker--4K-6K for a good private school? damn they're cheap down there in portland. i shopped around and for 6K the best I could come up with was a mediocre catholic school. 12K - 18K was more in the ballpark. we happen to live in an exceptional school district so we didn't go that route. i can do a lot with 12K.
