maccy1
Hello all, Im new to the area and Im curious if there are any good, somewhat mellow skin and ski areas near Portland. I just want to huff and puff and then float down.
jaee
Hi Maccy1 There are some fairly mellow trails from Government Camp to Timberline and beyond if you want close. The Alpine trail starts at the top of the little ski area (Summit?) right in govy and the Glade trail starts at the end of the road to the west of the Huckleberry Inn. Skin up, ski down. I've skinned into and around Timberline before and never been hassled. If the snow level has been low and Wx cold the skiing can be pretty nice in some of the glades. Kevin_Matlock
If the snow level is low enough, Ski bowl. You shouldn't get hassled and you get the mellow groomed runs. Seems to me this topic has been covered a time or two before... try doing a search.
sweatinoutliquor
Related to the skibowl idea... Try cruising up the mirror lake trail towards Tom, Dick, and Harry Mtn. Seems to be a pretty mellow skin in, doesn't put you heading up ski slopes, but gives you access to some pretty great views and mellow rides down. The snowpark is on the right side when you are heading up to Gov. camp. Usually their are snowshoe folks that have a trail into the lake, which is a good start up.
