In light of the recent bad weather and snow on the mountain, would the footprints and snow cave have to have been made either Saturday or Sunday to have been spotted? One would think that they would have been snowed over had they been made last week. Also, has anyone seen Beck Weathers doing any interviews/commentary on this situation?

If one of them was unable to climb (use the axe) and the two other decided to escort him down, that would be the case their left unnecessary weight (stuff).

I'm curious if they found ice axes, or perhaps pickets... I keep hearing/seeing "ice picks", which means absolutely nothing.

If axes were still there, not good, because I can't imagine leaving without those. If pickets were there but no axes, then perhaps good.

Apparently (http://www.oregonlive.com/newslogs/oregonian/) the sheriff is specifying "ice axes"; since, unfortunately, they have to deal with stuff like this all too often, I bet he knows what he's talking about.

The other two must have came back to the cave. When leaving Kelly the first day they would have been strong and not leave their axes.

They must have came back if it was really bad. Why leave axes though?

In bad snow. Doesn't make sense.

They each might have had two tools for climbing the NF Gully, that'd be 6 tools.

Since they were past the difficulties it'd make sense to ditch the extra tools and rope.

Keep in mind that these people who are reporting do not know the differance between axe and picket or ice tool

Wouldn't climbers sometimes carry extra ice axes? Didn't their last message say the two younger guys were going back for help? They have shovels, can't a folding shovel be used for decending if its not too steep?

Unless you're utterly unable to grasp an ice axe yuo wouldn't leave it - you need it to stop any "skids".

CNN - from scanner -

Found in cave -

2 axes

Additional ice tools

Sleeping pad

Anchor straps

Additional equipment (ropes)

When crews got to cave, they went to adjacent area and dug all the way to rock, therefore they feel there is no additional cave in area.

guys, listen...

they probly each had two tools for the steep NF Gully. Once past the gully they wouldn't need two tools anymore.

we can't realy draw any meaningfull conclusions from the abandoned gear.

all we know is they are still out there somewhere...hopefully dug in and hanging in there...

Just curious. If the weather broke wouldn't they head up to the summit and down the south side? For those who climb Hood often would it be easier to summit and go down the south side or to climb down the North face from where they found the snow cave? Looks to me like the South side is the easy side to get down. Again let me state I have not climbed Hood so I am just curious. With all the developments lets stay positive. The guys need our prayers and positive vibes. Here is east coast sending our prayers. Wayne New Jersey

A fine, useful technical/equipment point.

Still wishing everyone best of luck. One comment. They keep saying that the "Y" is meant and 'yes, I am here'. That's not what I think it meant. Wouldn't that be an arrow pointing out that they left and which direction they may have gone?
