Farrgo Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 So I'm trying to get stoked on the backcountry scene after living in Bellingham for four years and then Summit County for one season. What the best backcountry areas in SW Washington and N Oregon? Come on, share the goods. Where are the secret stashes? Nate Quote

DirtyHarry Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Where are the secret stashes? Well, Nate. Its a secret so don't tell anyone, but I hide my stash under the cookies in the Teddy Ruxpin cookie jar just to the right of the toaster. But now that I told you, I don't want to come home to find my stash all gone and you sitting in my chair all cheeched-out watching Barney Miller reruns. Quote
Farrgo Posted August 22, 2006 Author Posted August 22, 2006 Thanks for the gracious and informative responses. Quote
Winter Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Nate, there's at least two good books out there on this topic as well as lots of info on the web on this site and others. Do your homework, and I'm sure folks will help you out if you have specific questions. Quote
gapertimmy Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 (edited) Well nothing will be quite a sick as Summit County gnar, but I agree with Winter, pickup up Backcountry Oregon which has a ton of info on Hood/St Helens skiing. There are numerous TR's on this site about skiing the Oregon volcanos, and turnsallyear.com is a great resource for ideas on spots to ski (and has TR's organized by time of year which will help with your quest for gnar) Oregon doesn't have the sickest steeps (except for Chute 4 at Mt. Ashland) but there is some worthy goods to be found Edited August 22, 2006 by gapertimmy Quote
Farrgo Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 Thanks gapertimmy and Winter. I have checked out turns all year and will get myself a copy of backcountry oregon. Quote
DirtyHarry Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Note to Farrgo: asking for beta on where to go b/c skiing and asking for "secret powder stashes" are NOT the same thing. Quote
Farrgo Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 Point taken. I should of been more specific. I didn't expect anyone to tell me where to duck the rope for some fresh tracks. I just wanted to know if there was anymore to the backcountry around here than just St. Helens and Hood descents. Quote
gapertimmy Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 bonus points for anoyone who can name this secret gnar location! Quote
DirtyHarry Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Well, the best thing about skiing in Oregon is that you're not all that far away from Washington. Quote
