111 Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 (edited) Climb: Rooster Rock in the Menagerie-5.4 backside route on the rooster Date of Climb: 2/20/2006 Trip Report: The climb is clear where the sun hits it but god damn, what a shitty thing in the shade. Did the sketchiest lead of my life on 5.4 covered in ice and snow. Skyclimb would be proud if this sketchfest. Snow on every hold and a thin iceflow right through the center of the climb. In retrospect, I shoulda just turned around, but I had a friend with me who had never been to the top, so I had to do it. Still, the top made it almost worth it. Gear Notes: slung up the old iron anchors for the fire lookout as pro because the cracks were filled with ice. Approach Notes: tail is reasonably clear. Edited February 22, 2006 by 111 Quote
sweatinoutliquor Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Burley... I went up to solo that 3ish months ago and the crack was filled with ice. I threw out a big "f that" and kept going. Maybe interesting in crampons though? I would say sure 5.4 when it's all dry, but each time I've been up it always been moist and seems harder that 5.4. At least that first bit. Any pics? ~Nate Quote
AFIVE Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 I did that thing back in 1990 after we were over the hill in the Keith creek drainage. Is there still parts of that delapedated lookout tower on the summit. I still have a rusty nail I picked up off the summit. Most of the stucture had fallen off towards the highway. Just curious. corvallisclimb Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 there is still a little bit of the structure. mostly just the base and a few peices of scraps, lots of history in those woods. Quote
retired Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 I made a coat rack from a board I found in the pile. it had the names Gary & Dave "47" carved in it. The rack part was from a single point antler I found at the base Quote
111 Posted March 17, 2006 Author Posted March 17, 2006 I also noticed on the hike back to Hwy 20 that there were insulators nailed on the trees every so often at about 15 feet height. Telegraph cable to the lookout? Quote
