Alpine_Tom Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I've been interested in Mt. Garibali since I read in Fire and Ice that it formed partly on top of the continental ice sheet. It looks like it'd be a more interesting winter climb, sort of on a par with Hood, but I can't find any trip reports of it. Does no one climb it? Or is it one of those climbs (e.g., Mt. Pilchuck) that you don't bother reporting on? Quote
fern Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 It gets 'climbed' a lot by the easy route and skied. It's an easy day trip with a snowmobile. And a common side-jaunt from the Neve ski traverse. The S. Ridge of Atwell sees lots of attempts when it's in condition and the weather cooperates usually more Feb/Mar time of year. It doesn't have the same sort of steep ridge/headwall geometry that the other cascade volcanos have though. Quote
PaulB Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Any ascent is best done while skis can be used for the bulk of the approach, either from Elfin Lakes or Brohm Ridge. The standard routes require only an ice axe and a rope, maybe a picket or two. Quote
Zoran Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 If you have moment maybe you can have look into the Elfin Lakes side: http://www.pzs.si/forum/viewtopic.php?t=509 You should go there this late spring. I am going there again with my friend. Only one thing was bitter from our trip. We left extra gear in the hut and some guys stole few things. Quote
Black Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 I climbed south ridge of Atwell about 15 years ago with Richard Fabishe, Chris Rowe and Vance Colbert, best climbed when there still snow on the face. We did it with minimal snow the south and west face have the consistency of a vertical beach. Climbing is really easy and no harder than 5.6 or may be 5.7 but after the snow melts expect no protection. I seem to remember that the rock crumbles in you hand and the rope sending large boulders trundling down slope at Rinharde, “so best to lead”. The summit is a 30 metre or so spike of unstable disintegrating rubble good for getting your adrenalin pumping. We descended by traversing to Garibaldi and walk a down a snow covered ridge not so hard. Quote
