Try the Black Box wines, especially the cabernet and the merlot. very tasty.

 

I like Hardy's shiraz as well.

 

For nicely priced, good drinkable wines, good (not the Almaden or Franzia) boxed wines are the way of the future. Australian boxed wines are way ahead of the curve than anything else here in the US.

edit: OOps. I've been informed that CS wine is $2.99 at Trader Joe's, not $3.49. It still ain't $2. Lucky Californians.

The Aussie boxed wine at Costco is better than 2 buck chuck, but about the same price.

Great topic! Several years back my wife said, "we just can't keep drinking a big bottle (1.5L) of wine EVERY night." The solution? I started buying boxed wine. Problem solved.

The Charles Shaw merlot is the best IMHO, and at $2.99/bottle, a pretty darn good bargain. Still the better boxed wines (like the Black Box) come in at just under $5, and are definitely much better.

I got blacked out on some cheap port once. I thought it was going to be real wine and not crappy desert wine. Still, I'd do it again for boxed port.
