minx Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 I know I can find this with a quick web search but I'd like to see some first hand reports. Any good skiing in the Southern part of the state? I'm sure there is but I don't know about it. St. George area and beyond. Quote
MATT_B Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 I know there is a place just outside of Cedar City. I don’t remember the name of it though. I hear it has really good skiing but isn’t hyped up like the other resorts in Utah Quote

foraker Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 Go see rock formation known as "The Wave" in the Paria area. It's on BLM land and you'll need a permit but if you go in winter it's not such a big deal It's not a long walk but a tad brisk in the morning this time of year until the sun's been up a little bit. minx Posted February 18, 2005 Author Posted February 18, 2005 thanks all. i'm particularly interested in snow sports. not so much site saying as something to do on a regular basis. never done any canyoneering. hopefully not as claustrophobic as caving!?! Quote
cj001f Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 never done any canyoneering. hopefully not as claustrophobic as caving!?! Can be as technical or as easy as you want. Awesome fun www.canyoneeringusa.com Very cool site. Quote
Dustin_B Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 There are several good national parks in southern utah that are deserted this time of year. And with an average of like 9" of precip a year means that there is usually not that much snow there. Great weather, just a little chilly. I was in the area in Jan. and was the only one at the car campgrounds on the weekdays. nice. try that in the spring or fall. Quote
Thinker Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 My place can be quite entertaining, Minx. If you get tired of the snow and need a cozy fireplace to warm up by, feel free to dig me up in Salt Lake. Quote
willstrickland Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 Brian Head is the best skiiing down there. It's a unique setting for skiing and definitely worth a visit. Usually lots of Vegas locals there. Elk Meadows is so/so, not worth your time IMO. Quote
TBay Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 get your stoke on... southern utah is goin' off this year! January 13th '05, the santa clara river hit its 500-year flood and the virgin hit its 100-year flood... imagine what the VRG looked like!!!!! (there goes all the comunal weed crop at "little jamaica") only three weeks later the virgin hits it 50-year flood... what does this mean... its means that the southern wasatch is getting POUNDED! theyre at about 250% above normal snowfall. snowsport recommendations... other than brianhead and elk meadows you've got endless amounts of BC touring Bryce Canyon: what you'll want to do is head to bryce canyon and ski endless amount of shots through the labryinth of hoodoo, spires, towers...guaranteed to be your best outing, an unf#*king real experience! then skate ski the 30km groomed trail of the bryce canyon rim. (note that the ponderosa rival the size of the PNW doug fir). Red Canyon: just a repeat of bryce. that should keep you occupied in the so utah snowsport department. ice- cedarcicle, tusher falls, loads of never before ice in pangquitch canyon.... bro got on some fa gnar in kolob canyon. ever been on the grotto ice walk or johnston canyon ice walk in canada, zion has a coupla kick ass cruiser ice walks on navajo sandstone between the tunnel and checkerboard mesa. sorta like reverse canyoneering. shit busted! gotta go, boss is callin' pm for more beta Quote
