Starker Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Sweet! That's good news and very exciting. I'll be fine on the vertical ice. Will a mountaineering axe do? Or should I carry in a couple of tools? We were planning to wear low cuts to the glacier and carry our boots in. From then on we'll wear boots and cramps until we return to the Glacier Meadows. But then we've never been there before. Quote
Chriznitch Posted August 19, 2004 Author Posted August 19, 2004 Hmmm. Sounds like only a short section that could be led with your buddy's snow axe if necessary... Quote
Fairweather Posted August 20, 2004 Posted August 20, 2004 cj, Â Nice picture. Some Mount Olympus trivia: The glacier near the base of the icefalls in that photo is over 1100' deep! Source: UW glaciologist who was manning the IGY hut below Panic Peak in 1981. Those guys used to give free Kool-Aid to climbers...along with some good mountain trivia! Quote
Alpinfox Posted August 20, 2004 Posted August 20, 2004 Â Supposedly the ice in the Ruth Gorge (Alaska) is over 5000' deep. Summit of Mt. Dickey is ~5500' above the ice, making the Ruth Gorge the deepest gorge in the world. Quote
