Ok, so this is way overdue... I wrote it on a road trip last week, on my PDA Geek_em8.gif

Snoboy and the Gaper

So many tales of lucious plabness drifting up from the Oregon had this snoboy jonesing for a bit more ski action. laugh.gif

So many missed chances, and a bad spell of weather made it look unlikely that I was ever going to feast on the famous corn that the sisters were rumoured to cook. Finally I managed to find a time when there was a weather window, a work window, and a partner. fruit.gif I was finally on my way...

Unfortunately, gaper the timmy wasn't able to play all three days with me. He did promise me luxorious accomodation at the bend in the river though, as well as some excellent STOKE.

Sunday saw me getting a lazy start, and spending a little time in the village of Seattle. There my goal was to get some maps, and drink coffee at Hine's Public Market Coffee. I got the maps. Sadly I was too late for the coffee that day. cry.gif

I pulled in to Timberline Lodge parking lot late that evening, and after packing my bag, settled in for a few quick zzzzz. 1AM arrived all too soon. yellowsleep.gif

Hiking up the side of the Magic mile with no moon was a beautiful experience. Several shooting stars accompanied my delerious stumbling. I can't undestand why so many gapers had their headlamps on the whole way. confused.gif Maybe they needed them to put their crampons on for the cat track. cantfocus.gif

Maybe if I had used my headlamp, I would have seen the beginning of the bootpack. blush.gif Instead I managed to posthole for a while, delicately trying to balance on a refrozen snowboard track.

Soon I got on the program, and was catching up to a few groups, and meeting a few people who were already on the way down. The sky was lightening, and there was soon a beautiful shadow of the cone spread out below me. cool.gif

I made it to the hot rocks just below the start of the hot rocks. Boy, that sure is a smelly mountain!

Being alone, and having a chronic hip problem flaring up, I decided that this was far enough, and was soon enough back to the bottom, and napping in the meadows by the lodge.

Not long after, I was doing some urban orienteering, trying to find Chez Gaper. laugh.gif The giveaway was the "Life is Short, Spray hard" sticker on the truck.

Shower, nap, doggie kisses, pictures, geeking out, more maps, pub, food, beer... truly some of the best hosts anywhere. thumbs_up.gifwave.gif

Up again, too early... I think I know why I have never really been a corn farmer.

Today was to be the day. thumbs_up.gif More delerious stumbles eventually led to snowline, and the further I walked, the better my hip felt. Skiing is good for me, body and soul. Soon enough, we were at the top of the Hayden Gl., not long after that, we were on top of Middle Sister.

I love being high. wink.gif Slightly hazy views in all directions were spectacular. So many more choss piles to slog up!!!!

Finally, time to schralp. laugh.gif Would I remember how? Was I about to make a fool of myself in front of my hero?? A couple of turns in, I was back in my happy place. OK, so it wasn't powpow, but it was some damn fine snow. fruit.giffruit.giffruit.giffruit.giffruit.gif

Bottom, shorts and more sunscreen, drinking from cold creeks, free pumice basegrind, linking together ever smaller patches of snow until finally it was obvious that there were no more turns to be had that day...

Chinook likes peanut butter cookies, so do I. laugh.gifcheeburga_ron.gif

How do you top off such a spectacular day? A viewing of "Aspen Extreme" is a pretty good way. yellaf.gifyellaf.gif

Day 3 was supposed to be spent on the S Sister. I was getting tired now though; 9000' + 4.5 hrs of sleep in 2 days will do that to you.

Sadly timmy got the dreaded "We need you to work tommorow after all..." call, so I was on my own. 2000' of perfect corn on the front of Bachy was not a so suck consolation prize. laugh.gif

Time to head homewards... almost. Eugene seemed like a good place to crash that night, and it was indeed. Once again the "... Spray hard" sticker was the hobo sign of a good place to crash out. Muffy, badvoodoo, and addie made it an evening I won't be forgetting soon. wave.gif Is there some sort of contest in OR for who can be the awesomest host(ess)?? Next time I will try to remember my climbing shoes so I can say that I have climbed at the famous columns. wink.gif

For me, I think this will be the end of the ski season, and it was a truly fine way to end it.

Oh, yeah. I got my coffee on the way back. laugh.gif
