PeterF Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 Everyone here seems to forget the alps... My guess is Mt Blanc has by far the highest in pure #s, I saw somewhere that over 100 die every year. 100 per year, and that has probably been going on for a while, so potentially thousands have died on mt blanc. I think maybe for ratio, some peak in the soviet union? All those russian hardmen climbing up with crappy gear on beastly mountains probably leads to pretty high attempt/death ratios. I would bet on pobeda...that peak has a 3 mi ridge at 7k which is buffeted by winds, so given a ill-prepared party it could be pretty easy to die up there. Quote
hopalong Posted June 10, 2004 Author Posted June 10, 2004 I was thinking that the Alps might have a large amount of fatalities as well. Quote
klenke Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 (edited) "100 people every year dying on Mont Blanc." A little math for you: 100 years x 100 per year = 10,000 dead on Mont Blanc. Damn, we better chop that menace down before it kills us all! More likely the mountain kills 5-10 per year, probably even less than that on average. Edited June 10, 2004 by klenke Quote
