Hey L,

can you elaborate on that a little? I'm probably going to pick up a pair of the "S". Fuzzing around the seams or just in general or what? Did they not leak before and are now or is the seam grip just for abrasion protection?

They aren't waterproof by any stretch, but then neither were any of the three pairs of Makalus I had before. I wear a Goretex oversock with them.

Overall I like them a lot. They are comfortable and very light. They walk well, rock climb well, and I've comfortably climbed AI2+ in them.

I've got some three or four year old lasportiva kevlar boots, and the fabric definetly abrades quicker than leather. But nice and light, so its all a tradeoff. The fabric snags on sharp rock. I've melted some of the frays back with a lighter but be careful if you do.

I've been leaning towards leather. I just thought of annother reason for it - the leather will stretch to your foot, or you can stretch it. Also less seams to try to waterproof.

La Sportiva K4S solves the abrasion problem with a urethane coating. I've had mine now for a few months to replace plastics on Rainier. Worked awesome, totally waterproof. Much much lighter than plastics. Built on the Makalu last. Warm down to 0 or so. As warm as my old purple koflach's but not as warm as the new Arctis Expeds.... Fine for 3 seasons on Rainier.

Took mine a few hundred heavy pack miles to break in though.....

Thanks Loren. I should have paid closer attention, the ones I'm considering buying are the Extreme S, rather than the regular S.

However, I found a pair of the old Trango Extremes like jjd has in the photo there for pretty cheap, new.

Anyone climbed in both the old Extremes and the Extreme S? Prefer one over the other, etc?

The regular S is a sweet summer alpine boot. Seam seal them BEFORE you ever used them. I was quite happy I did this. They'll last a hellavu lot longer.

Will, I also got a pair of the Extreme S when my other leather insulated boots blew apart this past winter. I LOVE the extremes. Super comfortable (I could hike forever in them), they climb great and as far as I can tell, they are very warm for leathers. Granted, I haven't had them in any sort of very cold weather. I was also really surprised at how waterproof they were after a long day of slogging through deep, wet, slop. They were perfectly dry inside.
