Dru Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 2 victims of otter treated for rabies By BECKY SHAY Of The Gazette Staff People bitten by a pet otter last weekend near Roberts will undergo rabies treatment. The treatment is a precaution, because the otter was killed and not enough brain matter remained for rabies testing. The otter had escaped from a pen on the ranch where it was kept as a pet and was killed after biting people trying to return it to its owner's residence. Officials said the owner has a state permit for keeping the animal, which had apparently been domesticated for several years. More details on what led to the otter's death became available this week as officials looking into the incidents wrapped up their investigations. Carbon County Sheriff's Deputy Josh McQuillan said a man went to feed the male otter Saturday and was bitten on the hands and knee. He received stitches and other treatment and was released from Beartooth Hospital in Red Lodge. The otter, which had been in a pen, got free and showed up at a nearby house. The otter played with and chased dogs at that residence, before the woman who lives there brought the dogs inside, McQuillan said. When her husband returned home, he patted the otter, which followed the man to his pickup truck and got inside. The man decided to drive the about 40-pound animal back to the ranch where it was kept. "As he's driving down the road, it attacks him," McQuillan said. The man, who was bitten in the neck and hand, jumped out of the truck. The otter jumped out too. The man got back into the pickup and went home, only to have the otter return, McQuillan said. The family called the Carbon County Sheriff's Department. Before long, friends of the family arrived and the man who was already bitten and two other men tried to get the otter penned, McQuillan said. During the process one of the other men was bitten several times on the legs. If you are bitten People who are bitten by animals need to report the incident to a public health agency. Anyone who is exposed to an animal that may be rabid -- or has not been vaccinated against it -- can protect their own and others' health by making the report. Carbon County Public Health Nurse Linda Stewart said the proper authorities can then find and either quarantine the animal, and watch it for signs of rabies, or kill the animal and test it for the virus. Stewart said controlling rabies includes keeping dogs secure. It also means letting wild or unknown animals stay undisturbed. "When you see a strange animal, don't approach it, especially if it's a wild animal," Stewart said. Animal control officers and Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials are trained to handle stray and wild animals, she said. "They were trying to get it in a cage and it attacked them," McQuillan said. "So it was hit with the shovel and then they drove over it with a pickup." Both the homeowner -- who was bitten in the pickup -- and the man bitten trying to capture the otter were treated at Beartooth Hospital. Carbon County Public Health Nurse Linda Stewart said two of the three victims will undergo rabies treatment. Stewart said she did not know why the third man refused treatment. Typically, an animal thought to be rabid is either put down and its brain matter tested or it is quarantined so officials can watch for signs of rabies, Stewart said. Rabies incubates in a wound then follows spinal pathways up to the brain, Stewart said. Last year Carbon County had at least five exposures to possibly rabid animals and one cow that tested positive for rabies, Stewart said. "If the animal can be captured and quarantined, we can watch that animal and rule out that they are not going to turn, we don't have to go for that treatment," she said. Montana doesn't have any kind of funding for rabies treatments, Stewart said. The six-phase treatment can cost up to $2,000, she said. Quote
