I saw this photo published in .... "Fire Management" (?) page with CBS video footage of catastophic wing failure mid-flight (try the link in lower right under multimedia tab..) and another crash in CO from the same year (if I remember correctly...) of a PBY: These planes are just pushed to the limit ALL the time. There are no "milk runs" here. 200ft off the deck at 150+ knots, full payloads, turbulent air, always new terrain, and other air resources buzzing around. Dangerous! Edited March 5, 2004 by max Quote
Ducknut Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 Its sad, but hand-me down ex-military aircraft that already have mega airframe hours doesn't help either. Quote
EWolfe Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 Props It's great when Monster garage uses $10,000 aircraft parts for their projects for almost nothing. They get 'em for the cost of the aluminum weight cuz they are retired from airframe hours. Quote
Jake Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 That pic where the plane is going past the pickup low to the ground isn't a crash pic. I've seen it before and there are photos from several different angles that show that though it looks like its gonna crash, it doesn't. Apparently, the hill drops away really steeply on that side. Fejas Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 This do it for ya then! I still feel safer flying across country then I do drive through seattle at 5pm... Quote
max Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 That pic isn't a crash pic... Right. I was just pointing out the serious stress on airframes used for fire, not to mention the thrashing many of these planes recieved during their (classified!) military tours. Quote
