You've all seen these. Tibetan prayer flags. WTF? What's up with people who string these things up at base camp? I mean I could understand if you were a practicing Buddhist, otherwise, it's the ultimate in kitsch. It's like having a pair of those ghetto rock climbing shoes. Poseurs.

It they string them up on a himalyan expedition what's wrong with that? They are honoring the local custom and helping to make their sherpas more comfortable with the climb. If they string them up on Rainier, unless they are a group of Tibetan climbers, they may be guilty of posing.

I have some flags strung up in my closet. Brings back fond memories of my trip to Nepal. And possibly helps me safely summit the mound of laundry blocking acess to my dresser. yellaf.gif

Tibetan's believe that the prayers written on flags are carried in the wind to those who need them.

At Thanksgiving dinner grandma cut up cloth material into flags and handed out the flags and sharpie pens to everyone. We wrote our own good wishes on the flags. I then attached the flags to an old broom stick and mounted the stick on the deck.

Good wishes to all who need help in the world. There's a lot bad shit going in this world at the same time most Americans enjoy a bountiful life.

That's a cool little ritual. On New Year's Eve, I've gotten inthe habit of writing 3 things on a piece of paper and burning it.

1) one thing you are thankful came into your life in the last year

2) one thing you want to rid yourself of in the coming year

3) one thing you want to invite into your life for the coming year

Another zen ritual a some friends of mine started doing a few years ago.
