bigdrink.gif to lummox for startin a great thread on new climbers. It got me goin in several thoughts. One of those that stuck was the startin to climb thing. When I was a kid thinkin about what I wanted I had a great experience. My Mom introduced me to a friend from school. I told her that I was interested in climbin and she told me to go for it. Turns out this lady was Anore Bucknell( I think that I spelled that right) she was one of the first women to summit Denali. We had a few chats about stuff like; I could do whatever I commited to, She liked Mt Mckinley more than Denali, climbers are just a little different, and you gotta respect the environment that your in. Havn't seen her in a long time but her impact sticks around.

It seems to me that most of the hardcore climbers I've met had similar experiences. Somewhere the folks that have not interacted with these people miss the heart of the sport. Who ever it is, I mean Sharma has a great respect for the rock and passes it along, but ya miss that if your whole experience is seeing a picture in some rag.

Discuss or flame on about face time helping us learn.

It's about having a social interaction with someone who pushes you higher then you were....an not about looking at porn in some mag. You can fantasize about climbing all day, but you only get better by doing it. If it takes someone else or it comes from within, climbing porn only puts you in a frame of mind....it doesn't improve your climbing ablility. rockband.gif

that's part of my thought too. the thread wern't headed were you started. I think most of these new "climbers" are missing a lot of what climbing is about. We may be able to fight it. We may have to sit back and laugh. You still deserve a brew for tryin.

ya know. i have climbed with some younger guys. kids who started in the gym. and they have come to hold in high regard the nasty runout climbs. pucker factor will always be a consideration for climbers. at least some of them.
