fern Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 Grouse Grind, Baden Powell Trail, Cypress Provincial Park, Mt Seymour Provincial Park are all closed to hikers (and climbers) due to fire hazard. I think Lion's Bay also although that may only be on weekends. Violation warrants a $2000 fine. Alpine climbs affected include The Camel, Widowmaker Arete, East and West Lions, Pup Buttress, etc. Quote
Dru Posted August 21, 2003 Posted August 21, 2003 The fire ban was upgraded yesterday to a voluntary ban on entering the backcountry anywhere south of Prince George. How they think I'm gonna spark up a forest fire getting flown in to a glacier I don't really know. Quote
murraysovereign Posted August 23, 2003 Posted August 23, 2003 The likelihood of you starting a fire is only part of the reason for the closures. They don't want people in the back-country because it's one more thing for them to have to worry about in the event a fire starts. They'd rather not have to expend limited resources and manpower on searching for and evacuating people. Quote
ken4ord Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 I was planning on going up on Slesse, what is the deal with that area? Does it fall in any of the closed area? What is the smoke like over there? Anyone know? Quote
snoboy Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 No smoke at Slesse, but it definitely falls into the "voluntary ban on entering the backcountry anywhere south of Prince George." Details here. More info on the fires in general here. Please be careful. Quote
jefffski Posted August 29, 2003 Posted August 29, 2003 it is no longer voluntary. http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/pScripts/Protect/WildfireNews/index.asp?Page=DisplayArticle&ID=511 Quote

This thread is a good summary. Quote
jade Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 does anyone know if the sport climbs at Whistler is closed? I think Cal Cheak is, not sure about Whistler. Quote
snoboy Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 Not sure what areas you mean by "Whistler", but as far as I know, everything north of Squamish is closed. Quote
