So due to the fact that I only have weekends to climb I have been thinking about picking up an old snowmobile to get me up some of thos snow covered roads to make more winter climbs accessable. I have a couple of questions however.1. If I buy one what are the chances of it getting stolen when I park it somewhere for a couple of days while I am climbing?2. What about rentals? where can I rent one? Is there anyone who rents shit machines so I dont have to pay premium $$?

Anyone done this before?

Both Alex and I have bought old beater sleds for this purpose.

Renting is really expensive, I can't imagine it being worth it.... don't know of anyone who rents crap sleds.

As for it getting stolen, I guess it depends on where you park it, and how much of a shit-mobile it is. I parked mine at Rainy Pass for two days and nothing happened, but of course who's gonna steal an old '88 with a small track and drag it out 20 miles, when they've got a super-powered modern mountain sled? They have ignition keys, so its not so trivial to just drive off with it anyway.

Also keep in mind that an old sled isn't going to get you up a snow-covered road unless its already packed down a bit (by other sleds, say)..

I just went through this process of buying a sled. Expect to pay quite a bit of money for something that works, and even more if you need a trailer. I got REALLY lucky and got away with a working sled and trailer for under 1000$, but typically you can expect to pay 1000$ for the sled alone, and then another 500$ for a trailer.

Expect to learn about snowmobile maintenance very quickly. They are temperamental and routinely have problems. If its not the sled, its the trailer.

I am very excited at the prospects though. Accessing skiing, ice and alpine climbs looks like its going to be alot quicker for those several trips I might take a year where a long approach on a road is reality.

1) I dont know. I think it mostly depends on who else is around. If you are deep in the backcountry, I doubt you will have problems. If you are a mile from the trailhead on the mountain loop highway, there might be more of a concern, but I am just speculating.

2) Rentals are typically 100-150$ a day. There are very few places that rent, and some only rent the sled, not the means to get it somewhere. Renting sucks.
