kitten Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 I took my daughter to the Reptile Zoo in Monroe yesturday. It was an experience! They have all sorts of cool reptiles from snakes, alligators, and turtles. My favorite was the soft-shell turtle - funny little nose. Did you know the Mamba snake is the most deadly snake and can travel up to 15 MPH? YIKESTER. Has anyone ever had an encounter with the Reptile Man? Or anything about reptiles to share? Quote
ExtremoMtDude Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 is it the mamba that can also rise up to about the height of your head, and they also are very agressive and will attack for no reason. i usually like snakes but that is just freaky. Quote
Dru Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 the gila monster has no fangs and whgen it bites you, must chew and chew to gnaw the venom into the wound Quote
catbirdseat Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 The Reptile Man moved recently to Monroe from Goldbar. He will take portions of his collection to schools and put on shows. He is very entertaining. He has an enormous tortoise that he will let wander about and an iguana that he sets atop a box. The iguana would start to wander and he would just put it back on its box again and again. He brought several of the poisonous snakes and handled them in front of the kids, which surprised me. Among them was the Black Mamba. He even harassed the thing to get it to show it's fangs. I've seen the show twice. The kids absolutely loved it. The Reptile Man . Quote

What nature was thinking in giving them day-glo orange coloring, I have no idea. Afterwards I learned they're worth at least $2,000 each on the black market. Temptation sucks. Quote
Dru Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 pssssst hey buddy wanna score some Gila? pure prime stuff here. normally they're $2000 but hey... the first one's free Quote

I grew up in Phoenix with the desert as my backyard. Many a time have I come across rattle snakes. And my intelligent brother brought home a gila monster that stayed the the backyard for awhile. They are VERY illegal to have in the state. But worth big bucks... Quote
Dru Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 so you're saying they are no more venomous than, say, the kmomdo dragon with its infectious bite from the rotten meat stuck in its tooth cavities? what about that Trivial Pursuit answer "only venomous reptile" then, huh? are you saying Trivial Pursuit is WRONG Quote
Dru Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 says here venomous "Venomous" but that the Mexican Bearded Lizard is venomous too.... so much for Triv Pursuit. Quote

As I recall they are venomous and have a lock-jaw effect when they strike. Don't you have to cut off the head to get them to release? Quote

kitten Posted May 21, 2003 Author Posted May 21, 2003 I am a real woman and have seemed to misplace that information. Quote

The plastic cages did disturb me a bit. But where else would I have the opportunity to see a Black Mamba? It even looked fast. I don't think my husband could stand the idea of snakes in our house or backyard. Quote
minx Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 wussy husband! snakes are cool...i just don't like wild animals caged. it's disturbing. i hate circuses and zoos for the most part. There is a place for some zoos i guess. but i'm a bleeding heart liberal. oh well i guess it's a baseball game instead of reptile man this year. Quote
chelle Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 Guess I shoulda paid more attention watching the Discover channel last month. You're right Dru. Must have got them confused with the Kimodo Dragon. Reptiles are cool. Quote
kitten Posted May 21, 2003 Author Posted May 21, 2003 I love the Discovery channel. Only we don't have cable of any sort and therefore don't watch TV. But I can stay up until 2AM at my mom's or in a hotel watching the Discovery channel or Animal Planet. Quote
Dru Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 Disco Channel is good fun for staying in strange hotels at work. You can go to sleep watching some sort of doc about hyenas, and miss half of it, and when you wake up in the morning they are showing it on repeat so you see the other half. Quote
