swissman Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Planning a quick trip to climb/ski St Helens before all the snow's gone. Because of scheduling, I might not be able to get a permit for the climb. How much do they check if you have a permit and what happens if you get caught without one? For speed, I'm thinking about the regular route via Monitor Ridge since it's the fastest drive in. Any input? Quote
Winter Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 If you're going up during a weekend, you're likely to get checked. I don't know what the penalty is. You may not even get a ticket, but it could be as high a $50-100. During the week you're more likely to fly under the radar. Quote
Rodchester Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Don't go from Marblemount snowpark...there is NO snow!!! I just did it for the annual mother's day thing and while it was fun, I'd go from climber's bivouc (SP?). Â The snow is melting FAST and given that there just wasn't as much snow as usual, it is not a great time to ski it. Get an early start so you can rip it up before it gets too mushy. The lower part was like wet ecement on Sunday. It sucked ass. Â No opinion on Rangers citing people without permits. I've never been any time other than preseason. Â Good luck. Quote
skykilo Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 There is ample snow to ski to and from Climber's Bivouac. They save half the permits for sale upon the day, just show up at Jack's Restaurant in Cougar early in the morning (if you want to cooperate with The Man). Quote
ChrisT Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 FYI I heard that Jack's is under new ownership and open from 7 to 7. It ain't the Man anymore. Quote
skykilo Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 By The Man, I meant the bureaucratic structure in place to ticket people who neglect permits, and whatever enforcement might ensue with further negligence to pay. In that sense, I believe The Man is the concern. Quote
ChrisT Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 My mistake. By "Man" I meant the rather large guy who used to sit behind the counter. Quote

I thought half were reserved in advance by mail, and the other half are doled out in a lottery the day before and only available the day of if there were any left over from the lottery (unlikely on a weekend day). Makes it a real pain to cooperate with the system when its only an hour and a half away and there's no reason to drive up the night before... Quote
ChrisT Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 The lottery starts today...the beginning of restricted access season wherein only 100 people per day are allowed to climb. I agree, it is kind of a pain. Â More info Quote
skykilo Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 My bad, you're probably right about the lottery, but would it ever matter on a weekday? Â Yeah, that guy behind the counter WAS big. He was nice, though. That change must have been very recent. Quote
swissman Posted May 15, 2003 Author Posted May 15, 2003 Thanks for the info. I've seen about the lottery, but since it's held only at 6pm on the day before the climb, that means leaving Seattle way too early in the afternoon. I think I'll go on a week day and try to fly under the radar  Olivier Quote
b-rock Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 I think the consensus is if you are going on a weekday and want to be legal, you'll probably be able to get the permit day of after Jack's opens. Just not on a weekend. For what its worth. Quote
