I know good and well the trail to colchuck lake has been beat to death and boottracked, but what about the split going towards stuart lake? Does anybody know if there is a beat trail going that direction?

A bootpath goes that way at the Colchuck Lake Trail junction. Don't know how far the bootpath extends. But, come on Josh, it aint that far to the lake anyway (few miles). In the cold of morning the bootpath isn't necessarily needed anyway.

No, you're right, It was early and I was thinkin' lazy smile.gif THe more I thought about it it dawned on me that from the junction, it's much easier (mostly flat) to stuart lake than to colchuck lake. My only real concern would be any potential wallowing up the moraine and glacier to to beneath stuart, but as you say, cold of morning should work out.

Come to think of it, last Saturday we met two guys camped out on the trail before the junction. They told us they were going off to climb the Ice Cliff Glacier Route on Mt. Stuart. They were asking us if they needed snowshoes and we told them no way. It was noon when we saw them, so they may have also helped to create the bootpath to Lake Stuart.

Really? Wow. I was up there (Colchuck and Enchantments) in early June last year and the rangers told me that I did not need an overnight permit.

(Or maybe I just needed the self-issued one at the trailhead because they weren't doing quotas yet?)

Yeah, I thought permit requirements were June 15 to October 15. Could be wrong, but I think we went up in early June a couple years ago to do W. Ridge of Prusik to avoid permit issues.
