  1. I was expecting one of those god awful motor sailers.

My cousin has done foredeck in at least one Volvo Ocean Race (haven't talked to him in years though). I couldn't imagine doing sail changes at night while setting 24 hour speed records in the south ocean surrounded by growlers.

  2. Somebody found a barn cat with folded ears in Scotland in 1961. It turned out to be an incompletely dominant gene so some kittens from a litter will have folded ears and others won't. All folds are descended from that one cat. It takes about 3 weeks to find out since they are all born with straight ears. Apparently they are really expensive.

  3. Thanks Rob.

I just realized that working with goggles will be a major issue. I'll have to remember to take mine and try them with some mountaineering helmets and see if any will work. Apparently the Grivel Salamander is designed to work with goggles. I wonder the if the headlamp clips can serve a dual purpose or if the goggles will fit underneath.

  4. My helmets are getting older now and are quite heavy. I've stopped wearing my ski/snowboard helmet altogether because of neck strain. I don't really want to collect more and would like one helmet that can do skiing/snowboarding, summer rock/alpine as well as mountaineering.

Do the foam mountaineering helmets provide adequate rear and side impact protection for skiing?

Are there any helmets with effective variable venting that can be used in both hot and cold weather with the addition of thin toques or removable ear caps?

  5. So single mothers don't need support or health care?

With good education and access to condoms etc. there should be fewer unwanted pregnancies and fewer AIDS victims. That falls under health care as well. It's a coupled system such that by spending money in one area it is saved somewhere else.

Welfare can be the gateway out of unemployment. Which is more useful to society, a productive worker or a homeless person?

Public programs are an investment in society. I'm a firm believer that improving the class separation problem as well as reducing poverty will allow for more efficient and little used health care and welfare systems. The current system in the US is exacerbating this problem so a change of tactic is needed.

A short term investment that could result in lowering crime could feed back into your pocket through lower home insurance rates for example.

The capitalist system provides one feedback mechanism for optimisation but it is incomplete. Some regulation from the Government is necessary for it to work properly. It's the balance between the two that must be restored.

  6. From my limited understanding of the world I guess I would stand on the centrist side of things. The Republicans really strayed from their supposed conservative ideals but still claimed to follow them. This worked in electing Bush but failed for McCain. I guess the voters figured it out. This doesn't mean that everything that conservatives stand for is wrong. There is a balance that is required for a healthy society.

I hope that the unprecedented mandate given to the Dems and Obama won't result in an unhealthy swing to the other extreme. What will the Dems do with the blank check? The Republicans shooting themselves in the face with Cheney and Bush are going to have to work hard to rebuild the party into what it should be and to have an intelligent and reasonable voice of opposition.

  7. Hardshells are good for standing still when it's wet with a working DWR. The breatheability is poor.

Softshells are good for moving and wet but require maintenance of the DWR.

Down jackets are good for standing around when it's cold. It can be stretched into wet use if it has a really good DWR.

Synthetic fill jackets are good for standing around when it's cold and possibly wet.

Fleece holds its volume better than puffies as under layers but puffies pack smaller and are warmer for the weight.

Take the properties of the layers and apply them to the conditions you expect.

For backcountry skiing in the Squamish/Whistler area I wear a polypro baselayer with a thin fleece for most of the climbing. If I'm cold I add a softshell while active. Once I stop I put on a puffy synthetic belay jacket (over the softshell if it's on already). I just bought some softshell alpine pants for all day wear and if it get wet or cold I have a pair of hardshells that I can put over top. I intend to use a similar philosophy if I ever get out ice climbing. It should be noted that I sweat a lot and start feeling nauseated if I'm sealed up in hardshell. My girlfriend is perfectly happy in hardshell jacket and pants hiking in the rain where I would have everything unzipped and be ready to puke. I'm much happier in softshell for the most part.

As for fit, like anything it depends on the correlation between how the company thinks people are shaped and move and your actual physical being.

  8. The extra length should only be an issue when not wearing snowboarding boots. I always just wore a belt. Are these to be used with other boots as well? Mountaineering/ backcountry?

I'm around a 32" waist and 29" inseam. I just bought some Patagonia Alpine Guide softshell pants and they fit well. Just roomy enough. I'm not sure if that's what your looking for. General purpose ski/mountaineering stuff tends to fit a little better than snowboard specific or park ski style stuff which is designed to have the waist below the ass and the crotch at the ankles.

  9. Customs, even if not followed, show something about how people are expected to treat each other.

I had a stand off in MEC the other day trying to get help. What is the eye contact/ body language code for "I would like help"?! They need stations with a help wanted light like on airplanes. That place seems to be hopelessly understaffed. I've had few good customer service experiences there unless I actually knew the person.

  10. I've messed around with trying to do that stuff but I'm either missing something in the technique or my guitar setup is way to bad. Probably a combination of both.

I've heard another recording of the same style and the songs sound very much the same. It seems like you're stuck in one key due to the open tuning and reliance on ringing open strings.

Reminds me of the Chapman Stick.

  11. McCain choosing Palin as VP erased whatever credibility he had left. Imagine a cabinet made up of similar ill thought out placements. It's often joked about but there is a good chance that Palin could end up as president given McCain's age and health. How many 70 year olds can still work a high stress 40 hour week let alone what should be a 24 hour a day job like being President.

Experience gives evidence of past performance, good or bad, but it's not the whole story. It makes for a shorter learning curve IF all of that experience directly applies to the current position. Many companies will choose a less experienced person based on their personality and apparent aptitude for the job. This is a bigger risk but the pay off can be huge. I don't think it's actually much of a gamble.

At this point I trust the Democrat machine more than that of the Republicans.
