Sweet. Thanks so much for the responses!

Are crampons generally sharp enough out of the box, or should I give them a sharpening before I go out? What kind of file do you all use to sharpen them? Also, is there any reason one can't check an ice axe and 'pons on an airplane?

There are a few members of Red Sox Nation in town - the owner of the Morrison Hotel at 7th and Morrison decked the halls with Ortiz jerseys during the Series. If you move to the Hawthorne area, you'll be a short bike ride away.

Brief report: I headed up this morning, leaving the Timberline parking lot at 10. Visibility decreased immediately, and I decided to bail at the top of the Magic Mile cause I didn't want to get more disoriented than I already was. I enjoyed skinning though, and I'll definitely be back for another try.

The axe came today and it is a beaut! A pleasure doing business, Lub.

Either this storm will pack down the fluff from this week's storm and create a solid base, or there will be massive glacial outbursts and all the roads around Mt Hood will be washed out like last year.
-
Yeah I saw the forecast this morning and that made me a little wary. It looks the pause in the storm is happening today rather than tomorrow, and the wind and snow might be honking away again. I'm still looking for a partner to head up there, but I won't be shy about sticking to groomed or otherwise safe areas, or even buying a lift ticket and skiing in the trees if it gets really nasty. It looks like Stormin Norman will be open.

Anyone? I'm very nice and I don't bite hardly at all...

I grew up around Boston before moving here, and I think NW portland is a bit more like Cambridge, in the sense that it's a little more upscale. Hell, all of Portland, from the NW to North Portland and NE and SE out to about 60th is a lot like Cambridge and Jamaica Plain. outside of that, the area takes on a character more like that of Fall River mixed with a bit of South Jersey.

So I have my new AT skis and skins, and I was wondering if anyone would like to initiate me into the art of skinning by going up to the top of Palmer or something on Saturday. It looks like there's a shot at decent weather, but I'm not interested in taking any chances on unstable snow.

Who wants to sell me a Raven Pro or similar light mountain axe? i'm looking for 65 or 70 cm. I would prefer Portland area, so I don't have to worry about shipping.

Amazing! The Vegas airport was almost empty, both my flights left early, and I landed in the Boston fog 45 minutes early. I've never had a flight go so smoothly any time, let alone the day before Thanksgiving.
-
I'm heading back to Boston and connecting through Vegas. I'm dreading it. I'm worried i'll miss the turkey.

I was up on Gnarl Ridge yesterday to about 6500 ft and it was lovely. There was a good deal of new snow and not much wind. Down by hood river meadows it was pretty heavy, but up higher the snow was light enough that you couldn't easily make a snowball.

he's a TEACHER. i'm sorry you're not ready to learn. put your thinking cap on, tvashtarkatena, and maybe you'll eventually be ready to let bear in. to your mind.

A bear's gotta do what a bear's gotta do.

at least its an ethos. That was a pretty badass free solo that Bear put up last night in Morocco, don't you think? Linky

So would you, Frikadeller and Blueserac, disagree with Dave Burdick's article, where he says "Once people took these excellent new tools into the mountains, they realized that the modern designs climb mountains just fine, possibly even better than their predecessors. My advice is to buy ice tools that are primarily designed for climbing ice, because just about any tool can be used to climb snow."?

Is there a name for that form? aaab, cccb, dddb, etc

I just saw King Lines last night at the Reel Rock tour in Portland and it was wicked sweet. That's all.
