  1. No. That's why I was wondering if there was an official "lesser of two evils" in cases like this. Admittedly it was a long time ago, but this situation never came up in driver's ed.
  2. I was eastbound on Denny Way in the left lane. Traffic sucked, but I couldn't determine why since I was headed uphill and couldn't see too far in front of me. When I got to the traffic light in front of the Pacific Science Center, I finally saw that there was some sort of accident about three blocks up. There were flares across the street blocking the eastbound lane. Unfortunately it is illegal to make a left turn at that intersection. Since there were no cops there directing traffic and I had just watched a bunch of people go through the intersection and turn right at the next street, I thought that was what I was supposed to do. When the light turned green I went through and got into the right lane to turn off. A cop then waved me over and reamed me out because I rolled over the flares. He let me go with the comment "Next time, use some common sense!" So what does common sense dictate in this situation? Do I a) do exactly as I did and drive past the flares? b) make the illegal left hand turn? c) sit there until traffic backs up enough that someone official decides to investigate and tells me what I'm supposed to do? Thoughts?
  3. Isn't Cliffhanger that Stallone movie with the broken harness buckle and the bolt gun? We all thought it was a comedy.

Or, as an alternative: Diplomacy is the art of telling someone to go to Hell with such grace, wit, and style that he actually looks forward to the trip.

    BEND

When I was planning my move from the Midwest to Seattle, I consulted my cats' vet because they'd both had health problems and I was afraid they'd be traumatized by the trip. He gave me some Cat Valium as a going-away present. I gave each of them half a tablet about a half hour before I hit the road in the morning, and they were pretty much sedated for the rest of the day. Plus it was fun watching them try to jump up on the motel bed in the morning and totally miss it. I also invested in a plastic dog crate (big enough for about a 40 pound dog) and put a bunch of soft stuff in for them to curl up on and a water bottle and kept it covered with a blanket so it was dark and they made it through with no problems. My move was in March though, so I didn't have to worry so much about ventilation in a hot car like you would have to if you're moving in June.

    Cold-Water Swimmer

"I had to get up in the morning at 10:00 at night, half hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of dried poison, go work 36 hours a day down at the mill, and when we got home our dad would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Alleluia."

    Rappel Etiquette

I've been sport climbing for a couple of years and am just now getting into trad/multipitch. A couple of friends of mine are thinking about doing Condorphamine Addiction at Leavenworth sometime next month. The info I've seen online suggests a double-rope rappel back down the route from the top. Since they will probably be doing it on a weekend, I would imagine that there might be some folks climbing it below them. It got me wondering: if you have to rap off a route and there are folks below you, what is the proper "etiquette"? Do you wait for the climbers to get to a belay ledge before tossing the rope down, or do you just yell down that it's coming and let them fend for themselves? Also, I was recently out to We Did Rock at Exit 38 for the first time. From the condition of the chains, it looks like a lot of folks are toproping from them. I ran my rope through a different link to rappel once or twice because the bottom link looked so worn. If I see someone doing this, is it acceptable for me to politely point out that it isn't good for the chains, or do I just suck it up and continue to rap off a different link?
  9. When I lived in Northern Kentucky, there was the Grubbs Funeral Home. And Big Bone Lick State Park.
