  1. The danger of the hogsback route is other parties falling .They can take you down if you are roped up. I understand you wanting to protect your partner. It is something you will have to figure out for your self. You can go west of Crater rock and have solitude, but it is a little more steep with no steps.
  2. Left Timberline at 1:30am went up the standard route, but went west of crater rock. Topped out at 5:00am. Some breese but not bad. Had all kinds of conditions, mush, hardpack and some icefall to the west. All in all a great day, and I got home early. First trip of this year so I know what shape I am in. Carried crapoons, used ice axe and light wind gear, been there before but had a good time. No pics never really took a break.
  3. Most climbers in the NW think all climbing is between Vancouver BC and Olympia. I think one of the climbers on the 28 hr trip was 53. I only hope I can be so fit at 53. Layton has no room to talk he is a self promoter. Beating their chest or not 28 hrs for what they did is impressive!
  4. The SW chute is a great place to board or ski . Nice report, and nice Pics!!!!!!!
  5. I started racing motocross as a kid. I sucked but it was great. Found climbing later and never looked back, personally I find solo climbing more fun. I think my wife said it the best,[ you are just happy when climbing, and thats when I most want to be with you]. Psycobable or not, it is not that complicated for people who need this fix.
  6. My condolences to family and friends. For the grace of GOD there go I.
  7. The first time I went up the north ridge I made a wrong turn like PVD. We went to Obsidian falls, nothing steep on the north ridge though. The next time we went in one day and had just poles and light boots. We hit some steep stuff on the north ridge. A mazama group ropeing up thougt we were insane on all fours with colapsed poles. It seems to vary year to year.

It is not a bad thing I have sprayed the snow many times when I was sinking to my waist for hours . Just to make a summit, but to many curse words should be left out. JMHO.
  17. My best was in the last election,{It said give me 3 dui's over 4 Purple hearts any day}. Although I loath Bush I thought it was funny.
  18. We have helicopters from all PDX TV stations if you got caught you would be a celeberty arround Portland Vancouver .
  19. Anybody do a stealth climb of St Helens since they closed it? Some awesome weather for such a trip this winter. My self I am to chicken the media is St Helens crazy down here. I would not want my kids to see me in the paper,or on the news. I guess I have grown up.
  20. I was no where near the last but it was my first climb in the summer of 1979. When I was a kid I had my but chewed out by Harry Truman for tracking mud in his store. Also a guy I worked with had Truman helicopter down to thier Salem Or. Kindergarden class. They had written him a lettter asking him to come down. He told them the mountain would never hurt him.
  21. If the weather dries [ Ha Ha ] It might be ok . I do not know the road conditions to Killen creek trail head. But I bet it will be open by Memorial Day. The problem lies in the route finding going up the trail, under feet of snow. I could be full of crap about the road. I do know just 2 weeks ago I went skiing at Mt Hood and it never got out of the 20,s the whole day and they had 5 ft of snow at 6,000 ft. Also with the heavy rains we have been having in South West Washington I would be worried about snow conditions if it warms up fast. Good luck!
  22. Sorry guys got a big job ahead and would like to get some out doors in before the fall ends. look for the other boards out, there are out there. You might find them more enjoyable!
  23. Glad to see you can think past cascadeclimbers.com. The hooker line was classic.
  24. I have a support person do most of my writing and . But she is not from England. So my spelling sucks. Permits and guides cost money, where there is money there is corruption. I would like to see it taken out of the hills. Fat chance , just my thinking.
  25. You insult me and my iteligence. You call me a drunk engineer. There is no doubt I do not sweat the small stuff. But remember if any of you are sitting in a coushy chair writing posts in a building. It was my education and hard work that make buildings more safe in an earthquake. And the the work continues for upper impacts. I am not retired. But I doubt any of you can think past cascadeclimbers.com. Good climbinng be safe, and I still do not like guides. Sorry I do not drink.
