According to their web sites, Crystal Mountain is opening Sat. Snoqualmie Summit West and Stevens may as well. We're finally turning the corner!

One last comment: I think some overtime can raise productivity in the short term, but does not work over the long haul. People burn out and tend to be less efficient in their work. I think you may have a point in that some of the countries you cite in general probably have a better attitude about this than we have in a lot of our corporations (especially the bigger ones). I'm also a big believer in vacation, and always have negotiated for a minimum of 3 weeks paid time off. Not quite the Euro standard, but better than the measly 2 weeks that is common. :-)

There are many ways to make such an employer pay. Intentionally reducing productivity is the best, and easiest way to do so. Unless you are billing clients, this is feasible and I see nothing unethical about it. You have to work 50 hours - fine, but only actually *do* 40 hours of work, and, if possible, do something else during those 10 hours. Employers who treat their employees like shit deserve neither the respect, nor the full cooperation of their employees, IMNSHO.

Having worked at an employer that mandated 50hr weeks, bullshit. I've never worked at a company that "mandated" overtime. If I had, I'd have changed jobs.

The important thing to keep in mind is freedom and the choices regarding quality of life issues. Americans earn enough to choose to eat like pigs and have weight-related problems (and have the money and health care to subsequently treat the problems). Some choose otherwise - buying expensive gear and taking time to go climbing, for example. In contrast, recall the posting from the polish guy who could not afford climbing gear. Another example - Americans can and DO choose to buy cars in lieu of supporting large public-transportation infrastructures. They get congested freeways, wasted time commuting, and pollution as a result. They also are able to travel at will to any destination - like the cascade mountains to hike, bike, ski, and climb, for example.

I've seen these types of statistics before. What US city is the best place to live? What country? When you dig deeper, you quickly find that the statistics are biased according the criteria set by the person who designed the study. Weights are arbitrarily assigned to factors that are selected and scored arbitrarily.

Salaried, high-paid employees work longer hours - of their own accord. These people are often the most motivated to excel. University professors, graduate students, and scientists also work long hours - because they love what they do. This yields to breakthroughs in research, patents, and inventions. Where are the bulk of all these fruits of hard-work found? Socialist countries tax labor at a higher rate, reducing the desire to excel. People work less because the marginal gains - personal, economic, etc are less. Why work 50 hours a week for little benefit? Now, can you say thread drift?

Proof's in the pudding bitches! The issue was education . . I'm not going to even bother to look at your unreferenced abstract from a 2 page artcile published FOUR YEARS ago by in a small bulletin . . . Scott you ever study economics, you know the part whereby a larger country has a higher production of goods? Seems your Canuck education has failed you - the posting cited *per capita* productivity. Perhaps you should expand your lexicon to include common Latin phrases, or work on your reading comprehension skills.

And yet every Canadian I have met is a dim-witted product of group-think, socialist mentality. Imagine that. And where are the majority of the world's greatest universities located, pray tell? The best and brightest all want to come to the US to study at schools like Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Berkeley. They also want to immigrate to work in the US - the land of opportunity and freedom. Canada is a far inferior, second choice. Take off - hosers.
-
Some ROI - a socialist shithole, filled with secularist, boring, white-bread fuckheads who think their shit don't stink. You rival the French in your baseless pride.
-
All that Canadian education has done is produce a bunch of mind-numbed socialist drones, with delusions of grandeur concerning their own supposed sophistication and erudition.

One small flaw. We can work on it. I'm sure Christina smokes hog... that's what you get for trying to step up from skank.

She recently opened her big mouth about politics. She should STFU and just look pretty.

Probably a .com-mer that jumped on the bandwagon and was not very skilled at what she does. There's a lot of dead weight and incompetence in software dev. Good luck to her finding software development work in the People's Republic of Canuckistan!

Wow. as I recall you need a solvent like acetone to dissolve styrofoam . How much more expensive is this stuff? Why is it not more widely used? I am sick of throwing out (excessive!) styrofoam from every appliance or piece of furniture I buy...

I've heard talk in the past about biodegrable food containers - things like milk cartons, for example. The containers would begin degrading after the food expiration date. Haven't heard any more on this recently, but article cited above triggered my memory...

All things liberals lionize their "own" for - and explain away. Every time a celebrity goes on a drug binge, and claims to be working on kicking their habit, we are supposed to admire them for their bravery, but when a conservative has the same failure, they are to be mocked endlessly. Ditto for liberals on their 2nd or 3rd marriage (or 100th lover for that matter). As for the "moral force" question, I don't think Rush ever claimed to be that. He analyzes politics and has a "show" - the goal of which is to be entertaining and make $$. Sometimes he catches my interest, sometimes not...

And if whoever wins does a mediocre (or worse) job, then toss them on their ass in 4 years.

don't worry - the Republicans can perform vehicular manslaughter and deny responsibility just like the Dems, except at least Janklow had to serve a trivial amount of jail time. 1. that's a big "except" 2. I said they (politicians) are all the fucking same, didn't I? convenient post trimming...
