  1. Trip: McMinnville Oregon - Baker Creek Falls

    Date: 1/16/2007

    Trip Report:

School is cancelled! Time to hit the ice! You have probably never heard of Baker Creek falls. It is a waterfall about 30 min from McMinnville, Oregon. (McMinnville is about a hour south of Portland.) I live near McMinnville and was desperate to climb some ice. It had been quite cold lately so me and my brother dicided to make the drive up. It turned out to have Ice, yes i know it sounds impossible but on the left side of the 30 ft falls was about a section about six feet wide that was about 4 inches thick! When we got there the ice was melting quickly and wasn't bonded to the rock very well. We opted for a top rope. Turned out to be very easy i'd say W2. Was really sweet to find ice so close to home. After runing up it a few times we headed back to the car and spoted a few other "thin lines." I wish i had pics but my brother forgot the camera in the car. It was a great snow day! Anyone else climbed on this falls?

    Gear Notes:

2 Ice axes (i don't own ice tools yet)

    Approach Notes:

    30min drive on snowy/slick road

    25min hike on road/trail

  2. Would this ski bowl ice be in by anychance? How hard are these routes? Any of them Top Ropeable?

Could anyone put a red dot of the location on this map? I really want to get on some ice without driving 6hrs.

  3. There were plenty of people out there, and there was enough ice to climb or TR. When you go out to Banks during less-than-stellar conditions, just get more creative. Make sure you bring double 60's, and then you can always TR Zenith, the Cable, Trotsky's, Children of the Sun, Champagne (not in yesterday but re-forming) or any other routes that you figure out how to walk around to the top (these listed at least have easy walk-arounds), even when they arent in leadable shape.

I was wondering, this may sound stupid but, i didn't see how to top rope these climbs. Like the cable? Do you have to walk way around or rappel from the top? I just got back from my first trip to banks and it was great just to climb ice for the first time. I would like to top rope more climbs but don't know how to access them.

  4. I am planning a trip to banks the 26th though 28th if the weather report is correct will the ice come in more or melt? It looks as if the temps will get above freezing during the day and below at night. Is it worth a 8 hour drive?

  5. Hey I am going to buy my first pair of ice tools and was wondering what people would recomend. I am looking for basicly the cheapest that i can get that are decent quality. Any place in particular to buy cheap tools would be helpfull.

    thanks

  6. Haven't been there but by the look of it i would guess it is just like most of the rock in the coast range; loose, rotten, dirty, and mossy.

Speaking of oregon coast range rock. Does anyone have any info or climbed on the dike with the rapple slings in view from the about half way up the Saddle mtn trail? The rock on that looked really good compared to other coast crap... none of the stuff i climbed pulled off in my hands which is a good sign. where the red circle on the attacted pic is where the the slings were.

  7. Sounds fine to me. Just a thought. If these routes are so dirty to start with will they really get the number of ascents to remain clean? Quiet a few of the Butte's routes have already been reclaimed. But i belive that the FAest has the right to do new routes if pertaining to the ethics of the area. which it sounds you are. Sounds sweet! Good luck.

  8. I have talked to a guy who knew about this climbing area. I was wondering where it is located and what type of climbing is there. I believe it’s in western Oregon. Could somone post directions possibly?

    Thanks,

    Kip
