here's the latest -- with names.
Two Bellingham men are safe after an extended
hike on Big Four mountain east of Granite Falls. Rescuers found Mike Layton and Matt Anderson last night and walked them out. They had failed to return from a climb Wednesday.
No, actually, here's the latest.
With photos.

Who called for the rescue?

Trad leader on first gym boulder problem: "I can't seem to move because I have an extra belay device, three runners, a cordelette, and a bunch of extra lockers hanging on my harness!"
This does suck.
I hate when I leave my belay device on the belay loop and it gets caught on the plastic while bouldering.

Luna bars are more expensive for less food than the regular Clif bars.
Must be the added estrogen.

Where's Dr. Phil when you need him....

Don't forget to wear your plastics!
For newbies planning to slog glaciers this season in plastics, a practice hike up Si in them is a pretty good idea.

In Russia, climbers begin leading trad at 5.11b A3 on their first day. If they can't make it to the top of the 10p route, they are not a climber. We would call such a person an Amerikanski.
Ooops, wrong avatar....

ratings of american climbs are soft. yosemite and other american places are not hard for russian climber.
if climber trains hard these ratings are not to be concerned about.
every day i am running five miles and eating four times meals of red meat and climbing much. americans are drinking their starbuck and eating crybabie sugar cookies to make them feel good after missing redpoint. this is not the way to train for strong climber.
Have you met Polish Bob?

I own a set of Huevos (4-12) and they work fine. I've also used BDs and can't tell the difference.
You can get a full set (1-13) from gearexpress.com for $60.

The windchill has no effect, or very little, on how cold your feet are.
Wind increases the convective heat transfer rate from the body.

To turn this thread back toward the topic....
REI was started by climbers like you. Now it is the big Evil Empire. What happened. Who is at fault? Did conservative businessmen take over the coop and impose their will, or were the liberal granola folks lured to the dark side by the money and power?
Discuss.

This has been shown to reduce the strain of carrying loads over 45 lbs:
Sit-ups and crunches will do the same thing.
And I have the license to market sit-ups and crunches used for carrying heavy loads with a backpack.
No. It's not the same thing (are you gonna walk while simultaneously tightening your gut?).
The gut pad is supposed to yield very noticeable results. Here's a quote:
"I wouldn't go backpacking without one." --Rick Ridgeway
But I haven't tried one.
Ummm, you do walk around with some tension in the abdominal muscles. As you increase the load in your pack, you increase the tension in these muscles. Strength training of these muscles will allow you to carry larger loads more comfortably.
Try it for yourself. Strap on a big pack and hike while poking yourself in the stomach. Unless you are perfectly balanced, the muscles will have some tension.

After unsuccessfully looking for a dead snowboarder buried up at Baker for a whole day, I had the pleasure, in the parking lot, of having a camera stuck in my face. Sees as KING5 et al were in the parking lot to report on the great weather and skiing conditions and just happened to be there during the search. When the anorexic "blonde" with the pancake make-up asked me if I could point her in the direction of any family members of the then still unlocated deceased individual, I lost it proceeded to tear into her for a good fifteen minutes.
You "News Reporters" are nothing but vultures, as far as I'm concerned. In addition to picking carrion, you aslo serve the public by culturing fear and ignorance, spreading misery, and exploiting human suffering to make money through your sponsors. Whenever I see your vans in my town, with your aspirations of "going national", I am always correct in assuming that something bad is happening, and you don't say a thing around here until someone goes missing or gets killed, as far as I can tell.
By the way, I'm sure you're a nice guy, but do yourself a favor and find a more respectable line of work, one where you can use your talents to help people, rather than expolit them. And tell your bosses to fuck off for me, if you could. I think they suck.
Can't argue with that.
I spoke with one of skiers involved in the avalanche at Crystal, and he was grateful that the folks were able to respect their privacy and keep away the pack of baying news hounds.
I don't watch King 5 News.
It sucks.
