ASmith Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 I have a three year old MH Trango 3.1 with 5 days on it in the Alaska range. I unpacked it today from dry storage in prep for a trip and upon opening the plastic crate I noticed a really strong smell. The rainfly, or more specifically, the coating on the underneath side of the rain fly has turned to a thick, gooey, sticky mess. When you touch it your fingers real for hours and it is hard to even wash off anything it touches. Some of it has transferred onto the ground sheet as well as the inside of the stuff sac. Anyone have any idea or heard of this before? Quote
Ben Beckerich Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 No experience with that problem on the Trango directly, but I've had PU coatings degrade. Love that telltale poop smell. For only 3 years old, I'd definitely complain to MHW. My one warranty claim with them was kinda BS, but they did replace my gloves- just had to jump through their retarded hoops. Quote
ASmith Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 (edited) No mildew, nothing was, or got wet, or has any color other than some of the coating has turned a brownish color and you can see where some of the coating appears to be peeling and leaving pieces but none of it appears to be coming completely off of the fabric. Kind of like peeling skin stuck to the goo. Just a total mess. Called MH, they say 2 month wait for any warrantee work. Edited January 1, 2014 by ASmith Quote
G-spotter Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I have heard of this happening to people's Hubba Hubbas Quote
Ben Beckerich Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I'd love to know what causes PU degradation.. I think it's gotta be an environmental thing. Too much humidity, too little, too cold, too hot... something. Some people's PU coated packs and tents and sacks and shit stay bomber for a decade, while other's craps out in a couple years. And I definitely wouldn't be content to let the manufacturer claim it a "wear and tear" issue, like Deadbird did with a pack of mine. If I'm going to select a manufacturer to drop my $300 on BECAUSE I feel they're the least likely to sell me a product that will fall apart in a few years, and then their product falls apart in a few years, they'd better damn well give the benefit of the doubt and make it righteous for you. In fact, now that I've gotten that out of my system, I feel inspired to let Arc'Teryx know I'm not going to be satisfied with their answer about that pack. Especially when they'll fully replace my bro's 10 year old Alpha SV, which was a lot more beat up than my pack. Quote
Ben Beckerich Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 And fuck Mountain Hardwear and their two month long turn around for warranty claims. I think I'm done with those guys also. Quote
Coldfinger Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 No ideas here except send it in! Just judging by the size of the tent--you go with partners--so let them supply tentage until you get it back. Have had very good luck with MH warranty BTW. Quote
