KaskadskyjKozak Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 anyone been up there recently? I'm curious what snow conditions are like there. I've hit a lot of soft snow and postholing hell in the past couple of weeks elsewhere Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Mushy until about 8000' still. I'd take flotation. Quote
kdefields Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 We just did a one ascent on Friday 6/14/2013. The snow was good on the ascent but by the time we were coming back down (mid afternoon under clear skies all day)it was getting pretty soft. The worst area was coming back down the Fryingpan glacier. There is snow most of the way up the summit block but it is really rotten and melting out quick. I triggered a couple of small localized slides on the way back down that were about 4" deep. On the descent we were able to glissade all of the way down from Meany Crest to the valley but again it was triggering small slides that chased us all of the way down. Quote
climbingsolo Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 we just gave lil T a go. very soft snow conditions crossing the Cowlitz glacier, navigation skills and comfort around gapers are key. gaining the ridge to cross into the Ingraham was a bit tricky as well, no more snow pack, very loose dirt and unprotectable choss. The Ingraham is very much broken up with massive gapers but there is a line. Again, navagation and comfort around big holes a must. we never got the refreeze we needed to access the Whitman. the chute was a bowling alley with tire size rocks raining. i think this route is done for the season. might have better luck from the fryingpan side.
