Lafayette Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 If anybody wants to sell a handheld GPS unit I am in need of one. I have used the Garmin Etrex line, but am open to other suggestions. Just need simple features; ability to establish waypoints, paths. Quote
Water Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 any general price range you're looking at? Like...not more than..? I have a garmin 62csx or whatever it is, slightly older version than the current 62, but with compass and altimeter. I will probably sit on it for many more years since it gets the job done when I need it and a set of lithium batteries goes a year for me with occasional use for wayfinding and point marking. BUT, i did test one of the newer ones and they have definitely updated the processors or something, one of my biggest gripes is that my garmin can take an excessive amount of time to re-draw while you are panning around if you are scanning the map and have full topo detail on it. That is slightly frustrating, but not a navigation thing too much since it draws fast when zoomed way in or way out, its the mid level that goes slower. the new ones seemed damn speedy. Quote
Lafayette Posted April 17, 2012 Author Posted April 17, 2012 In the 50-100 dollar range. Preferably with a black and white screen. The 62 series are great. If you have a chance to use the new Delorme PN 60 it's a fun tool. With some fancy bells and whistles built in. Quote
bigeo Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 I have an old-school (no map) Etrex summit that I would sell for $50. Quote
jonathan schrock Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Preferably with a black and white screen. The older black and white screen models offer a shorter battery life and lower resolution. Other than reduced price was there a particular reason for your preference? Quote
Lafayette Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 In limited experience I have found the black and white screens to have significantly better battery life. Quote
jonathan schrock Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 (edited) ok cool. that's opposite from mine. Battery life is listed as several hours longer on the HC, and HCx Garmins. ymmv of course. Edited April 20, 2012 by jonathan schrock Quote
