Woodcutter Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Looking for conditions reports & some advice about where to head in the Sierras in mid June? Looking for long multi-pitch rock routes, with multiday traverse options if possible. Read about Matterhorn, Incredible Hulk etc, which look good. And Bridgeport is closer to the North so shortens the drive from Seattle. Any input would be really appreciated. Climb around 5.10, got 8 days. Thanks Jake the Brit Quote
curtveld Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 From my limited experience down there, here are a few thoughts - The transition from spring to summer conditions (i.e. dry rock up high) typically occurs around mid June, so a bit iffy. I did a June trip in '08 and found great climbing in the Yosemite high country (Matthes Crest, Conness) and Mt Whitney areas, and that was an above-average snowpack year. This year's snowpack is even bigger, so may be melting off later? You might try the SuperTopo website for more recent info. As far as routes, there are TONS of great choices at 5.10 and under. The Croft and Moynier select style guidebooks are both useful. That Sawtooth area you mention sounds awesome - wish I was going! Quote
Woodcutter Posted May 31, 2011 Author Posted May 31, 2011 That's just what I needed to know. I posted a beta-request on Supertopo: Reports of 250% snowpack & conditions 'pushed back one month' have led me to re-think the Sierras. Might just have to do a ski tour and embrace the gigantic snowpack http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1512478/High-Sierra-beta Thanks Curtveld, nice reply. Quote
lightD Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 You could ski tour near Mammoth and/or Bishop and still squeeze in some bouldering or sport climbing along with some 5K+ descents. You'll have some tough decisions to make. As long as the snow corns up.... Quote
