jraybern Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) My brother and I are looking for partners to climb Mt. Rainier this summer. Our schedule is flexible and we'll have about a 10 day window to work within. We have no climbing experience but will be in good shape (both in our 20s and former college athletes). We are just looking for a group to join up with for a climb. We do not want to go the commercial guide route. If there is anyone out there who is planning to climb this summer but needs some people to climb with, please let me know. The route is not that important to me. Edited July 28, 2015 by jon Quote
nhluhr Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Justin, I admire your enthusiasm but you may have difficulty finding enough partners to go on Rainier with a couple of guys with "no climbing experience". There are real dangers in many forms that require some level of experience to deal with safely. If you're asking relative strangers to put their safety at risk, what are you going to do to reduce and mitigate those risks? Quote
Josh Lewis Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 If you guys get some crevasse rescue, join me on atleast one hike or scramble or glacier travel trip, then I would be willing to be a partner, if it is crevasse rescue you guys are lacking, I might be able to help you guys or atleast associate you with people willing to teach. nhluhr Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 Do you still live in Kansas, as your email address implies? Quote
needtoclimb Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Do you want to get into climbing, or do you just want to have climbed Rainier? If it is the former, get into Josh Lewis' teenage climber group. They are climbing a ton, and quickly gaining experience based on their TR's. If your whole goal is just to climb Rainier, go with a professional guide. Yes, it is expensive, but this is your life you are talking about. And very few people are going to drag two newbies up Rainier just to get them up. Quote
jraybern Posted March 1, 2010 Author Posted March 1, 2010 I understand the concerns others have. I know that some guys take up relatives or friends of friends in large groups. This is the kind of group we are looking for. I know that some wouldn't do it - that is fine. I just thought this would be the place to see if anyone would. I am a teacher (and football/baseball coach). My brother is an arborist and spends most of his days in trees cutting branches. We both live in Kansas. I don't think you're going to have to physically drag either of us up. We simply won't be very technical climbers. I know that there are those on this board that think it is unwise what we would like to do. However, there are guys in way worse shape that make it up each year. There are also a lot of guys who know what they are doing who do not guide for a living. Quote
Josh Lewis Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Alright, your physical condition is not the problem, you need to know the z-pulley before doing this as well as knowing how to make anchors (which is a part of the z-pulley) as well as knowing how to prusik. Also do you know ice axe arrest and proper crampon use? It's not that we believe you cannot do it, which I believe you and who ever else is coming with you can, but if anything went wrong, it could be serious. Your goal is not impossible for this summer, but is gonna need some effort on your part. I sent you a PM. Quote
