What if you were already wearing a beacon of a different sort? It occurs to me that it 'might' just be brilliant to use this tool to scan a route with a helicopter. Barryvox

That makes more sense than a locator beacon. If I understood the text correctly...this recieves the signal of an analog/digital avy beacon...right? I would pay $15 to climb Hood if the money went directly to PMR for a pilot crew, a helicopter and a set of the barryvox....

I've wondered about this. I assume more climbers own avy beacons compaired to other locator devices already.

They obviously don't send out a distress signal, but neither do the MLU's.

I thought I would let people know that Clackamas County Commissioner Jim Bernard as put forth an attempt to "finally" make MLU's mandatory on Mt. Hood.

If there ever was a time to write to your legislators, it's now. Here's the article.

Also a quote from Alpinepronghorn earlier in the thread that is very helpful:

Write your state senator and representative. They're listening: I've had a 5 email back-and-forth with my rep. explaining the unitended consequences of beacon legislation (unprepared climbers taking greater risks, more calls for help, more rescues and more accidents. He's skeptical, but open to reason.

Remember, keep in civil. Point out that the experts (PMR, etc) oppose such measures.
