johndavidjr
Beckey somewhat recently published a 600-page book on the history of the Cascades which required twenty years of labor and visiting dozens of libraries. Chounaird published highly reflective essays and an influential instruction book, but nothing at all in past thirty years that I know of. Who is/was more intellectual? My vote is, sadly, for Chounaird.
olyclimber
Who is the most intellectualister? Is a Zen Buddhist an intellectual? Is it a disappointment if they are not? Who cares?

catbirdseat
One is an explorer, the other an innovator. Why compare the two? They are both revered and both important contributors to our sport. Why try to put one ahead of the other? Both are greats.
Raindawg
Chouinard also wrote "Let My People Go Surfing" in 2005. olyclimber
I think that sums up the question quite adroitly. I'm locking this thread.
