zeroforhire Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 With the recent news of alpinist closing its doors, I have seen a sudden spike in the sale prices of old issues. What is driving this? I mean, I know that all issues before 20 are rare due to the fact that the extras were burned up, but $600 for an entire set on ebay! Yikes! Am I correct in thinking that the earlier issues should be worth more than the later issues due to the fact that less were printed? Obviously the original number 0 is worth tons... but is the #1 worth all that much? Just a few thoughts... let me know what you guys think. Quote
G-spotter Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 let me know what you guys think. Here's what I think: If you are concerned about the "value" of your collection you were probably buying Alpinist for the wrong reason. Quote
zeroforhire Posted October 31, 2008 Author Posted October 31, 2008 I am not concerned about the value of my collection... I am just interested in the economics of it all... Yeah... it is a boring topic. Quote
Hugh Conway Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 economics? eBay is a very thin market subject to distortion. Alpinist failed because there weren't enough readers willing to pay for it. I doubt new readers will flock to it and so prices will be fairly stable at or below cover price except for perhaps #0. Sales of lost and lamented magazines like Off Belay or Mountain would verify this trend. Quote
