mountainmatt Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Heard about this on NPR this morning. Any know the details? Linky Quote
olyclimber Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Nice article...Snow Lakes? I assume that NPR reported it correctly...so where was it really? And check the comment to the article on that link. Nice. Quote
mountainmatt Posted October 27, 2008 Author Posted October 27, 2008 The article and the news story said snow lakes (there is a snow lake up there) but of course the map shows snow lakes over by the Enchantments. Yeah, that guy seems to be a real gem. Quote
Gary_Yngve Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 It was past Gem Lake, near Roosevelt Peak. The Coast Guard helo did the extraction around 4AM. Conditions were treacherous up there (snowy/icy but not yet skiable), and it was too windy during the daytime for the helo. Quote
jfreeburg Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 A friend and I tried to scramble up Chair Peak yesterday but it was too icy in the west gulley. We saw a single climber on the northeast buttress - he could have been with someone else. The climber was near the summit when we were headed down around 2pm. We also talked to two climbers approaching the east face at the same time. They were getting an awfully late start. As we were getting back on I-90, we saw a Seattle SAR truck headed up that way. Besides that, it was a beautiful day up there. Quote
Fearful_Leader Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Yeah, but after partying until 2:30 alpine starts become really cruxy. We knew we were starting late (especially with the botched approach involving 2 short belays), but man, the E face looked sweet! Windy and cold, but a spectacular climb. Saw the helo and a headlamp north of us from the ridge, around 6:30, but it was definitely too blustery for them to land. Hope the climber is ok. Quote
