rocky_joe Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Any word on snow, ice, general route conditions? Pics? Quote
godskid5 Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 did the middle sister, north route via hayden. i have a couple of pics of the south side of north sister if that helps. didnt look too close at it though. waiting for the pics to process. i will post them later when they go through. Quote
godskid5 Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 heres a pic from the east, coming up to the hayden glacier area. Â pic not showing, just cut and copy the above url. and on from about 9000ft on middle sister looking north Quote
ricklar Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Bump... Â I'm climbing North with a group this weekend and we're trying to get more or less current conditions. There's a report on Summitpost from 8/3 that shows snow on the traverse... not sure if 13 days would melt it out but it would be nice. Quote
sparverius Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 north sister is scary pile of dog feces late in season. Why not wait till it's snowy and frozen and safer? Quote
PaulO Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Though the traverse is not really visible in the picture above I can see enough snow showing at the near edge to say it very likely is still covered. Never completely melts until at least September most years. This weekend will be a soft sloppy mess up there with the extreme freezing levels 24/7 several days. Quote
rocky_joe Posted August 17, 2008 Author Posted August 17, 2008 sparverius- we can't really wait since we're trying for a sub 20 hour marathon of the sisters and broken top but not til the 5th of september. Quote
sparverius Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 alright. Be careful up there. It would be fun to wait for snow and do a ski traverse of the mentioned peaks. Quote
luvshaker Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 The snow patch in recent years has really shrunk, and last year was gone by mid August. At least 5 years ago I climbed the route around Sept 1 with no axe or crampons. There was even somewhat of a scramble trail below what existed of the snow patch then. Made for a quick trip with out having to worry about the steep slush. Quote
