KaskadskyjKozak Posted April 8, 2008 Author Posted April 8, 2008 heard an article on this on npr - seems counter-intuitive but you can't make the 5 much worse, so why not experiment, eh? stop and go and lots of lane changes noticably slows traffic. If everyone just went the same speed (even if it was only 20 mph) it would be a lot better. Quote
Hendershot Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Hardly, Decades ago, Oregon had a "Basic Speed Rule" where you drive at a speed safe for conditions. That is why signs in Oregon say "Speed" rather than "Speed limit". So on a clear sunny day with light traffic you could argue 70 is safe for the conditions. Conversely, if you drive 55 in a 55 speed zone during a snowstorm, without a traction device of some sorts in traffic, you could get a ticket. This law has been replaced by stricter legislation, eliminating the judge's ability to reduce a fine set by the officer. I think the overall message sent is that people don't know how to drive according to the conditions (traffic or weather). Legislation can not replace common sense. Quote
