hemp22 Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I saw this posted elsewhere. It may be old news, but I hadn't seen it before. Wild Country did some testing on cut/abraided belay loops. It's worth looking at if you're worried about the age/wear of your harness or belay loop. PDF: http://www.wildcountry.co.uk/dnlds/Belay%20Loop%20Test%20Lite.pdf Video: http://www.wildcountry.co.uk/Downloads/Videos/BelayLoopBreaking/ the tests are similar to the tests done by black diamond, and show very similar results. http://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/scene/beta/qc_kp_archive.php#102706 Quote
catbirdseat Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 The most radical test was a belay loop cut 75-80%. It failed at 8 kN. This is a lot more force than one can exert using any belay device. Take home message is that minor wear and tear is not a concern. Quote
billcoe Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Nice find Hemp, thanks for posting. They say that we can go back to not worrying about belay loops. I wonder if battery acid (and ageing) was to blame on T Skinners harness? Did the NPS do any testing on the loop? Quote
hippos_are_evil Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 They said his looop broke because he put a daisy on the loop and that caused wear in the same spot that made it super ratty. Quote
