I saw this posted elsewhere. It may be old news, but I hadn't seen it before.

Wild Country did some testing on cut/abraided belay loops. It's worth looking at if you're worried about the age/wear of your harness or belay loop.

the tests are similar to the tests done by black diamond, and show very similar results.

The most radical test was a belay loop cut 75-80%. It failed at 8 kN. This is a lot more force than one can exert using any belay device.

 

Take home message is that minor wear and tear is not a concern.

Nice find Hemp, thanks for posting.

 

They say that we can go back to not worrying about belay loops.

 

I wonder if battery acid (and ageing) was to blame on T Skinners harness? Did the NPS do any testing on the loop?
